Have you ever felt left out, judged, underestimated- like you didn’t quite belong? 13% of Americans live with mobility disabilities and often feel this way too. Despite this, most assistive devices are designed to check boxes, not spark joy. They are built for function, not imagination.
Me and my partner, Julie Steeb, created The Adventure Bound cane which corresponds with a children’s book that celebrates creativity, individuality, and self-expression. It follows the imaginative adventures of a child whose magical cane helps them protect and brighten their world. The goal of Adventure Bound is to empower children who use canes by showing them, and the world, that assistive devices are symbols of strength and unique superpowers.
This product is designed for kids to provide support while fitting into everyday life. It looks like something from their world, playful and familiar, not like a medical device. Alongside the cane, children receive a storybook that celebrates creativity and mobility, showing a character who uses a cane in fun, imaginative ways. The book encourages kids to personalize their own cane with toy‑inspired attachments and stickers, turning it into a personal accessory that reflects who they are while giving them the support they need.
